Ek 19 Saal ki Larki

Tale of a 19 year old girl hunt

This is no more a story but a prevailing norm in our society. Let me enlighten you with the hottest issue of existing and aspiring Pakistani Mother in Laws (aka MILs).
If there is one thing the entire nation is obsessive about; aside Panama’s decision, cola & tea brands and back bitching, that would be the Oh so holy! - RISHTA. Effortlessly for some - the ultimate life goal!

In Pakistan, usually the mothers of boys are in position of power for the purpose of rishta.

Bad news is that, there is serious shortfall of ‘Parhay Likhay NouJAWAN’ men. Girls are increasingly excelling in higher education as compared to boys. Meanwhile boys are lagging behind, some conveniently dropping out from college courtesy their “Friends” and their wish to; never walk the tough path of hard work and artisanship, while there are many others who are burdened to earn bread for the family at the cost of their education and grooming. Everyone wants a shortcut (Jugaar) in life to make money other than educating themselves.

And the minute the guy (now turned man) starts earning, their begins a phenomenon of girl hunt – Required: A 19 years old haseen, khobsurat, and educated Masi for their 35 year young Son with a 44” waist line. That girl must have the following “must haves”:
  • ·         Must have lived for 19 to 22 years on this planet. Any more experience render disqualified;
  • ·         Must have a financially sound family;
  • ·         Must have a thin sleek body structure and fine eyes to nose ratios;
  • ·         Must have a pinkish white complexion;
  • ·         Must have an MBBS or any reputable professional degree;
  • ·         Must have the consent to say good bye to her career upon marriage;
  • ·         Must have the endurance to absorb and smile to the ‘Tanaas’ issued by Mils & Sils;
  • ·         Must have the expertise in art of making Gol Rotis;
  • ·         Must have the skill-set of master chef;
  • ·         Must have a magical tea making mantra;
  • ·         Must have an excellence in performing all the domestic chores (Jharo Poucha etc.);
  • ·         Must have a presentable appearance i.e can be displayed as and when required;
  • ·         Must have a house full of her dowry; and what not, This list will never end!!

Now all that is when the the boy in discussion, her son, is a 35 years old “Nou Jawaan”, with no hints of progress and earns mediocre and at times something less then that, but the mother always wants a beautiful parhi likhi maasi, who is willing to sacrifice everything for her house and her son.
My questions to such moms: where are our celebrated Islamic teachings and cultural values now? Aren’t the “Ikhlaq”, a decent ancestry and education of her parents and family sufficient to tie the knot of your beloved son? Do the location and aesthetics of her house really matter?  Would her fair complexion and current body figure is the ultimate decider? Would you like all of this to happen with your daughters’ aswell? Is this what our religion and our civic sensibilities teaches us?

Hats off! To all those mothers and daughters who are currently encountering this phase of life. We as individuals and as a society must change this hypocrisy and women objectification sooner than later, for better and forever. May Allah Almighty guide our nation and have some mercy on us.
